For high vibration applications, use a rugged Pt100 temperature sensor
2021-08-03

对于高振动应用,请使用坚固耐用的 Pt100温度传感器 维连温度传感器For high vibration applications, use a rugged Pt100 temperature sensor

Turbines, pumps, and compressors generate significant vibrations that can cause temperature measuring instruments to give incorrect readings and cause premature sensor failure. Pt100 RTD can withstand several times more vibration than standard components, making it one of the best temperature sensors for high vibration applications in oil refining, petrochemical, power and energy industries.
Industrial and mobile machines vibrate during operation. This is normal. Most measuring instruments can withstand some vibration. However, when the vibration is large, problems will occur. This is the case for power generation and other industries that rely on large turbines, compressors and pumps for critical applications.
In temperature sensors, high vibrations can weaken wires and insulation, resulting in intermittent and/or incorrect measurements. Extreme vibration also shortens the service life of the temperature sensor, which means frequent downtime and higher operating costs.

What is vibrating: the type of vibration

When the motor, pump and compressor are running, they will shake. This is mechanical vibration. The engine and turbine also generate acoustic vibrations, which are converted into structural vibrations when they strike thermocouples or RTDs (resistance temperature detectors, also known as resistance thermometers). Fluid flow is another source of structural vibration.
The damage caused by vibration is proportional to the following factors:
● Vibration amplitude - the force exerted on an object.
● Vibration frequency - the rate of forward and backward movement.
In power plants, common vibration generators include boiler feed pumps, condensate pumps, steam and gas turbines, and generators.

How vibration affects temperature sensors

The main influence of vibration on temperature measuring sensor is mechanical stress. In thermocouples, vibration can cause material fatigue. This, in turn, can lead to insulation faults and short circuits, resulting in inaccurate readings and/or intermittent readings. For industrial resistance thermometers, the platinum wire of wire wound RTD is very thin and easy to break when subjected to vibration. A damaged RTD will generate noise in the output signal, give irregular temperature measurements, and eventually lead to an open circuit in the circuit. Thin film RTDs can deposit a thin layer of platinum on the ceramic substrate and then be packaged in glass, which is more resistant to vibration.

Pt100 sensors in high vibration applications

Thin film Pt100 RTDs are located in the best position for accuracy, cost-effectiveness and vibration resistance. Maintained Pt100 resistance thermometer is sturdy and durable, and can withstand several times more vibration than standard temperature elements. They work very well in applications affected by vibrations in turbines, pumps, compressors and other such heavy industrial equipment.
The benefits of using the Vialink Pt100 sensor include:
● Minimum risk of sensor damage due to vibration and/or shock
● Improve long-term reliability and stability
● High accuracy
● Fast response
