What is a temperature sensor?

What is a temperature sensor? The temperature sensor is a device for measuring temperature. This can be air temperature, liquid temperature or solid material temperature.
There are different types of temperature sensors available, each of which uses different technologies and principles for temperature measurement.


Different types of temperature sensors
Thermistors can be very small in size. They consist of a sensing element, which can be glass or epoxy coated, and have 2 wires, so they can be connected to the circuit. They measure temperature by measuring changes in current resistance. Thermistors are available in NTC or PTC forms, usually with low cost.
RTD or resistance temperature detector works in a similar way to thermistor, and temperature can be measured by measuring ohmic resistance. They are connected to the circuit in a similar way to thermistors, but they have a much wider temperature range and can measure extreme temperatures.
Thermocouples use two conductors, made of different metals, connected at the ends to form a knot. When the junction is heated, a voltage proportional to the temperature input will be generated. They are widely used because different metal combinations allow different measuring ranges; However, they lack the accuracy of NTC and RTD, making them the least accurate of the three types
Temperature probe is a very common and diverse temperature sensor. They are composed of thermistors, thermocouples or RTD sensing elements and can be completed with terminal heads. All three types of sensors can be manufactured into a variety of housing types - stock and custom. This allows for increased utility across the many different environments and media they encounter.

What is the purpose of the temperature sensor?
Temperature sensors are used to measure temperature in many different applications and industries. They are all around us; It exists in daily life and more industrial environments.
Some application examples are;
● Industrial applications - monitoring various machines and environments, power plants, manufacturing.
● Scientific and laboratory applications - scientific and biotechnology monitoring.
● Medical applications - patient monitoring, medical equipment, gas analysis, hot dilution cardiac catheters, humidifiers, ventilator flow tubes, dialysate temperature.
● Motorsport – measurement of exhaust gas, intake air temperature, oil temperature and engine temperature.
● Household appliances - kitchen appliances (ovens, kettles, etc.) and white goods.
● HVAC Applications - Commercial or domestic heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment.
● Refrigerated trucks and trucks.


Precautions when selecting temperature sensors for your application
When selecting a temperature sensor for your application, you should consider the following factors:
Temperature Range - Different temperature sensors can measure different ranges and may be more accurate within a certain range. Be sure to check the range of the temperature sensor and the expected range of the application before purchasing. The range of the temperature sensor shall be provided on the data sheet.
Accuracy and stability - your application may require a certain degree of accuracy; Compared with thermistors and RTDs, thermocouples have greater differences in long-term stability, so this should be noted. The most accurate temperature sensor is usually a glass coated NTC thermistor.
Size and packaging – The space available in the application will affect the type of temperature sensor selected. If space is limited, smaller equipment is required. The packaging style is also important because it determines how the temperature sensor is connected to the application and how the temperature is measured.
